A Remembered Welcome

Time for one of those rare "Awwwww!" moments. You don't get them often here, so wallow in it. Or swivel on it, see if I care.

It was seeing this on Cheezburger which reminded me of something from my own past.

When I first got to know my chum Alex over thirty years ago, I used occasionally to visit him at his family home in Brynteg.

They had a dog by the name of Toss. He was a rescue dog if memory still serves, and was a cross-breed of some sort, black and tan in colour and the size and shape of a small labrador. He had the temperament to match, in that he was - as we say hereabouts - as soft as a brush.

This did not preclude him from being protective of his humans, and I always remember that when I used to call on Alex, Toss would run barking furiously to the kitchen door when I knocked on it. Once Alex had opened the door and greeted me with his customary cheery "Hi there!", Toss - having thereby had my bona fides safely vouchsafed - would vanish swiftly into the living room, emerging seconds later with one of the sofa cushions in his mouth. As clear a declaration of "Sit down, friend, and take your ease" as you could hope to come across.

This was confirmed by the fact that, once I had settled on the sofa, Toss would come and sit on my foot, precluding the slightest possibility of departure.

Toss went to his long home many years ago, but perhaps - if there could be such a thing - his shade would be warmed by the fact that his loyalty and hospitality was still remembered with fondness. And now you can keep that memory (albeit second-hand) secure as well, can't you?
